As is the case every election season, activists and special interest groups send candidates and elected officials like me questionnaires, surveys, pledges etc… Some are meant to ascertain where I stand on certain issues of importance to them. Others are worded to try to trip me up and create a “gotcha” moment, and recently others have come with a threat attached.
Last year I received a pledge from a group called 60 Plus telling me that unless I signed their pledge I would be put on a list and could have an ad run against me. I threw that pledge in the trash and hoped they would make good on their threat so I could explain how I won’t fill out pledges from special interest groups with a metaphorical gun to my head.
Recently another survey showed up from a group called “Georgia Taxpayers United.” When I found out who the leader of the group was, and remembered that he said on Facebook he was trying to recruit a candidate against me I assumed the purpose of the survey was not to understand how I think, but to provide his group an opportunity to attack me. I did not fill out the survey.
In recent days Georgia Taxpayers United has begun sending out emails attacking those who have not filled out their survey and urging people to email candidates to insist they fill it out. They are trying to imply that the only reason someone would not fill out their survey is because they support higher taxes and Obamacare. Nothing could be further from the truth, but since I have an opponent this election year, you might receive an email from them about me. If you do, feel free to email me and I’ll be happy to answer any question you may have. Even if you don’t receive an email from them you are always welcome to email me (buzzbrockway-at-gmail-dot-com) to ask me any question you want.
I’ve never voted for a tax increase and this year I voted not once, but twice for the strongest anti-Obamacare piece of legislation in the nation, as well as many other good conservative pieces of legislation. During my four years in office I’ve been named a “Defender of Liberty” by the American Conservative Union, and received perfect scores from Americans For Prosperity and the National Federation of Independent Businesses. I’ve also posted a spreadsheet showing every vote I’ve cast in the past two years. It’s hardly a secret where I stand and what I think.
I reject the “gotcha” politics groups like 60 Plus and Georgia Taxpayers United engage in and refuse to play these sorts of political games. I wasn’t elected by special interest groups but by folks like you. I answer to you not outside groups – even if I happen to agree with the views of that group. People often complain that elected officials listen to special interest groups more than their citizens. The tactics of groups like 60 Plus and Georgia Taxpayers United only compound the problem and I don’t want any part of it.
I hope you will support me for re-election again this year. If you do, please consider donating to my campaign. Your donation of $5, $10, or $25 will help my campaign tremendously. If you’d like a free “Buzz” bumper sticker click here and give me your preferred mailing address and I’ll get one right out to you.
I’m honored to represent the people of district 102 at the state Capitol. I appreciate your support and covet your feedback and prayers.
