Rep. Buzz Brockway Appointed to Human Trafficking Study Commission

ATLANTA—House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) recently appointed state Representative Buzz Brockway (R-Lawrenceville) as a member of the Joint Human Trafficking Study Commission. This commission is charged with evaluating current law and policies related to human trafficking in Georgia, and determining the effectiveness of the state’s efforts to alleviate the crime.

“I’m honored Speaker Ralston appointed me to the Human Trafficking Study Committee,” said Rep. Buzz Brockway. “I look forward to working with the other members of the Study Committee on this very important issue. Human Trafficking is a brutal crime and every part of our community can play a role in providing the victims the help they need.”

The Joint Human Trafficking Study Commission was created by House Resolution 1151 during this year’s legislative session. The commission was created after an FBI investigation named Atlanta as one of the 14 cities with the highest incidence of child prostitution. The commission is composed of 13 members: 3 members from the House of Representatives, 3 members from the Senate, a local police chief, a district attorney, a juvenile court judge, a superior court judge, a public defender, an individual with expertise in advocacy for children who are sexually exploited, and an individual with expertise in advocacy for adult victims of human trafficking.

Speaker Ralston also appointed state Rep. Edward Lindsey (R-Atlanta) and state Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan (D-Austell) to the joint commission.

Together, these legislators will work with the other commission members to create a comprehensive system of services for all victims of human trafficking that will enable these individuals to recover from their exploitation. Experts will evaluate models of service from other states to recommend an appropriate framework for use in Georgia. The commission members will then review the expert findings and recommend any action or legislation that they see fit.

Representative Buzz Brockway represents the citizens of District 101, which includes portions of Gwinnett County. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2010, and currently serves on the Insurance, Governmental Affairs, and the Children & Youth committees.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

State Representative Buzz Brockway (R-Lawrenceville) To Seek Reelection

(Lawrenceville) Representative Buzz Brockway announced today he would seek reelection to the State House of Representatives. For the past two years Brockway has represented district 101 covering parts of Lawrenceville and Suwanee. Because of reapportionment the district number will change to district 102 and the lines will shift somewhat. “It’s been an honor to represent the people of Lawrenceville and Suwanee in the State House and I’d be honored to continue to represent their interests at our State Capitol for the next two years” Brockway said.

Over the past two Legislative sessions a number of important measures dealing with illegal immigration, human trafficking, abortion, criminal and juvenile justice reform, education, and jobs have passed. This week the House and Senate passed HB386 to remove taxes on energy for manufacturers, reduce the marriage penalty, and replace the sales and ad valorem taxes on automobiles with a one time title tax.

“I’m proud of what has been accomplished over the past two years but much more needs to be done. We’ve taken positive steps in reforming education, how government works, and creating a better environment for businesses to create jobs. However we shouldn’t be satisfied with unemployment over nine percent and a State educational system near the bottom of the nation in student performance. I will continue to fight to make Georgia the best place in America to work, live, and raise children” Brockway said.

Buzz Brockway was first elected to the State House of Representatives in November of 2010 and is a member of the Children & Youth, Governmental Affairs, and Insurance Committees. He has been involved in local politics since the mid-1990′s and served as Chairman of the Gwinnett Republican Party from 2002 – 2005. He also served the Gwinnett Republican Party as a Precinct Captain, District Manager and 2nd Vice Chairman. Since 2005 Buzz has blogged at Peach Pundit, the State’s most popular independent political blog. He is a 1990 graduate of Georgia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Management Science and runs a small business in Lawrenceville with his wife Christa. They are the proud parents of three daughters; Hope, Grace, and Joy. The Brockways are active members of Victory World Church at Hamilton Mill. Buzz is 45 years old and a 36 year resident of Lawrenceville.
